Browse window

The Browse window is the first window you view upon opening GSelector. The filter pane at left is where you select or filter Songs. The results browse pane at right shows the Songs you've selected, displayed in a customizable browse format. In this window Songs can be hidden, or de-selected from display. In the filter pane at left, you can search by any Attribute, Artist, Participant, Media field, Album or Song title, or by any combination of these. The combination of elements you search, or filter by - your search criteria - can be saved off and recalled for later use. These are called Saved Filters, and you can use them in many areas of GSelector. You can also save browsed Songs as Browse Lists, which can be recalled or used later for a specific Clock position. The pane divider can be adjusted as needed for better visibility. Simply click and drag the divider to adjust the pane size. The position of the pane divider will be saved for the user.

Filter Pane tabs

Click any tab in the image, or follow any Link below, for more details

Attributes tab

Artists, Title and Albums tabs

Participants tab

Media tab

Click one of the tabs above the Filter selection pane to open either a list of Artist names, Song or Album Titles, an expandable Attribute or Participant list, or an expandable Media settings list in the Filter selection pane. Selecting one or more items in the Filter selection pane will open a list of Song matches in the browse pane.

Selecting and excluding in the Filter pane

In any filter tab, select from the list of Attributes, Artists, Participants, Albums, Titles or Media values by clicking the Neutral icon for the item in the list for that tab. All selected Songs with that Attribute, Artist, Participant, Album or Title will be displayed in the results pane. In the illustration here, showing a list of Category Group attributes, the category group Long Songs is selected. When any item is selected, not selected items are excluded from the browse display.

The rest of the category groups are not selected. When items are selected, non-selected items are excluded. When items are excluded, not-selected items will be displayed in the results pane. Clicking Long Songs again will exclude the songs in the Long Songs category group and display the songs from the other categories in the browse window if no other item is selected.

You can click multiple items in each tab to display Songs with selected multiple Attributes, Artists, Participants, Albums, Titles or Media values. This lets you display Songs with combinations of Artists, Participants, Albums or Titles by using the Any or All radio buttons in the Participants tab, or the And or Or radio buttons in the Artists, Albums or Titles tabs.

Optionally, there is a right-click menu that allows the user to easily return a selected/rejected Attribute, Artist, Participant, Album, Title or Media back to Neutral . This right-click menu can also be used to Select , Reject  or Select Only. Select Only will select the current Attribute, Artist, Participant, Album, Title or Media and change all other selected or rejected attributes back to neutral. Using the CTRL key and clicking an Attribute, Artist, Participant, Album, Title or Media will also perform the Select Only function.

Selected and Excluded totals

When one or more Attributes are selected or excluded in the Browse, GSelector displays the selected and excluded totals for each Attribute. In this illustration, four Categories are selected, and one is excluded. The totals for selected and excluded items is shown in the header for the Attribute. The total songs in each element within the attribute is displayed to the right of the elements name.

Research Attributes

Dayparts listed in the Attributes tab

Date and History Attributes

NOTE: This image shows the Browse Attributes pane with the Film Name field enabled. See the Enable Film Attribute notes for details.

The Attributes Filter tab is the default tab for the Browse window. This tab displays all assigned Song attributes and also all Dayparts.

When searching by Attribute, if no Song has been assigned that Attribute, the Attribute will not be shown in the list. Although Dayparts are not Attributes, they are treated as Attributes for search purposes in the Library Browse window Attributes tab. So Dayparts are included in the Attributes list, and can be expanded for selection and searching. See below for more information.

Attributes can be descriptive, in describing the Song in some way, or historical, in marking dates when the song's status changed, or research-related, in marking the song's current research score for a demographic cell. For a full list of descriptive Attributes, see the Attributes topic.

Special conditions apply with Research Attributes and Research Columns Attributes. For details see Using Research Attributes in this topic.

Click any Attribute node to expand the list showing the attribute name and the number of Songs with that attribute. You can jump to an Attribute name for any Heading by opening the node and typing the first letter of the name. See the Hot Key search notes in the Working with Browses topic.

In the Attributes/Artists/Participants/Albums/Titles the count for each attribute value is shown to the right of the elements.

For Example: If you open the Category Group node in the Attributes tab, you'll see the counts for each category. In the Media tab, you will only see counts for the Opening and Ending nodes.

Last-Edited Attributes

GSelector supplies three different Last-Edited Date Attributes.
Last Edited
stores the most recent date a Song’s global data was changed.
Most Recent Last Edited
stores the most recent date a Song’s data (station specific or global) was edited.
Station Last Edited
stores the most recent date a Song’s data was edited in the current station.

Dayparts as Attributes in the Browse window

GSelector supplies five default dayparts (Overnight, AM Drive, Midday , PM Drive and Night) on initial installation of the program, or after creating a new station. The install dayparts are assigned in the Daypart Assignment window, and can be viewed in the Attributes tab of the Browse window. These settings can be edited or deleted. Select one or more Dayparts, and use the selection options to show Songs according to their status for that Daypart. If, for example, you use the selection options to exclude a Daypart, then all Songs which are excluded by having no Category Demand for that song's Category in the Category window, or banned in the Song window for that Daypart are displayed. See the Banning by Daypart notes in the Song window for more information.

Date Attributes

The Date Activated, Date Added, Last Edited (Global, Most Recent and Station) and Research Score Date Attributes all work the same way: You can select a predefined Date or Date range, or click the Custom button, which allows you to select a custom date range. Click the close Icon to display the defined date range in the Custom line. Then select in the usual way.

Artists, Albums and Title tabs

See the Notes on using the 'And' and 'Or'  radio buttons when searching in these tabs.

Each of these tabs displays a single list of, respectively, Artists, Albums and Titles in the station database. Use the selection options to display Songs with the selected Artists, Albums or Titles. In the Artists, Title, Albums, Participants and Media filter pane tabs, you can do wildcard searches. See the notes here.

TIP:: You can search by Hotkey in the Artist, Album and Title lists list: select a field and type a letter to jump to the Artists, Albums or Titles beginning with that letter. See the Hot key notes in Working with Browses for more information.

And / Or radio buttons

Click the And radio button to search by a single selected criterion, or a specific combination of criteria. Each time you click a tab and select a criteria, you add another condition to your search.  If the And button is selected, your search will get narrower until eventually no Songs may show.

Click the Or button to search by the selected criterion or another search criterion from any other tab. These conditions will also be cumulative, but will increase your results if records meet the new criteria.

Click the reset button to clear this set of criteria and start a new search filter.

Participants tab

See the Notes on using the 'Any'  and  'All' radio buttons when searching in this tab.

TIP: In the Artists, Title, Albums, Participants and Media filter pane tabs, you can do wildcard searches. See the notes here.

Click the tab to select Songs by any Participant. This tab lists all assigned participants for the active library list. If a participant has been defined for at least one Song, that participant will be listed under the relevant Participant heading.

Click any node heading to display the options to search by under that node. Use the selection options to display Songs in the browse pane. With the Any radio button selected, you can select and display Songs by multiple participants, including Songs searched for under other tabs. Note that the Show Unselected Song count field shows all unselected and all Selected Songs.

TIP: You can rapidly jump to a named Participant under any Heading by opening the node and typing the first letter of the Participant name. See the Hot Key search notes in the Working with Browses topic.

Any and All Radio buttons

These two Participant tab Radio buttons allow the user to specify the display of Songs by any of the participants, or only Songs featuring all of the selected participants.

With the Any radio button selected, select one or more Participants to display Songs with any selected Participants. In this illustration, GSelector is displaying any song with Steve Tyler and any song by Joe Perry as Composer Participants. Note, too, that as well as the selected composers (Steve Tyler and Joe Perry, both shown with a Green check), all other Composers associated with at least one of the Songs are also indicated with a Gray check.

But if we select the All radio button, GSelector looks for Songs with All selected participants. In this case, it has to find Songs with both Tyler and Perry as Composers.

TIP: The All Participants display option is a powerful tool, but only in very specific situations. In many cases, GSelector will not display anything under the All setting. Asking for All Songs by, for example, Bill Idol and Britney Spears will produce an empty display. The more detailed your lists of Participants, the more useful this display option becomes.

Media Filter tab

TIP: In the Artists, Title, Albums, Participants and Media filter pane tabs, you can do wildcard searches. See the notes here.

Click the Media tab to open a list of media-related fields to Filter by.

For the Hook Start and Hook End, Opening, Ending and Media ID nodes, each field in the Media tab can be expanded to display all existing settings that you have defined. The Hook, Intro, Media ID, Opening or Ending notes all offer a Custom field, detailed below. This lets the user can type in a value and either click the Search button or press Enter on your keyboard to start the search.

The External (Media) node allows selection of any items which have External Audio status assigned.

The other fields are all time-related, and allow you to search by preset time values. So you could search for all Songs with an intro value of between 15 and 30 seconds, or all Songs with runtime values of under 2:30, or between 3:30 and 4:30, for example. Special provisions apply when searching by Runtime, and this is covered below. You can also enter a value in the search field for Media ID, Opening or Ending. Select the attribute to Filter by, and then enter your criteria, then click the Search button. Click the Clear all button to remove all search criteria.

Searching by Runtime in the Filter pane

Clicking the Runtime header in the Media tab opens a range of Runtime selection options. Selecting one or more of these options will display matching Songs in the Results pane. Click the More Details button in the Custom header bar to open a further window, which allows you to specify  a time range. The fields accept |values in Minutes and Seconds. The selected Time Range can be as broad or as narrow as you wish.  Click OK to display songs which match the selected time range. So for example, you could specify Songs with a selected duration option of 3:30 - 4:30, and a custom duration of 5:45 - 6:15, specified in the custom pane.
Close the selection pane by clicking the close button. For more information, see the Custom Attribute Values topic.

Merge Duplicates

This Merge Duplicates button enables users to resolve the common problem of having duplicate songs in an enterprise database and the need to eliminate some or all of the duplicates after selecting one of the duplicate records to remain standing as the survivor.  Schedule history and station-specific attributes will be moved over to the surviving record for each station of which the surviving Song is to become active.  See the Merge Duplicates topic for additional details.

Swap Songs

This Swap Songs button opens the Swap Songs window allowing the user to replace a current version of a song with a new version of the same song, essentially moving the schedule history of the current version to the new version.

Here is an example where this option might be used: Two stations (Station A and Station B) begin playing a new song at the same time.  Weeks later a new version of the song is released.  Station A wants to continue playing the current version while Station B wants to move to the new version but retain the schedule history of plays of the song under the older version. When this option is executed, all schedule instances of the older version will be replaced with the newer version in Station B. This will allow the newer version to show plays from when the older version of the song was in place.  It will preserve the entire schedule history of the song, even though it was played under two different versions.

Browse List

Click the Browse List button to open the Browse List pane. From the Browse List pane the user can create lists of Songs for scheduling special programming, such as holiday countdown shows, “A to Z” weekends and other forms of programming in which an arbitrary list of songs must be scheduled in sequence. Lists created using the Advanced Search window are available in the List drop-down of this pane and can be edited from this Browse List pane. Audio can be played from a Browse List when the browse list has focus. See the Using Audio in GSelector topic for more details.

Automation synchronization buttons (NexGen and Master Control users only)

Under these conditions, this button allows the user to synchronize the selected Song Browse with the NexGen or Master Control Song details in the interfaced NexGen or Master Control database.

NOTE: You can only interface one playout system with any GSelector station.

Export to Zetta

The Export to Zetta button is displayed when a station is interfaced with a GSelector station. If Zetta 4.2 or higher is interfaced with GSelector, the Zetta button is always shown in the toolbar. This button can be used to force push assets to Zetta from GSelector. Select the assets to Export and click the Export to Zetta button. A warning is displayed when this button is used letting the user know "You are about to send X record(s) to Zetta. This may take a while. Are you sure?". The user is given a Yes and No option. Click Yes to proceed. Click No to abort the export.

For version previous to 4.2 of Zetta, the button is displayed when the Enable All or Songs box in the Zetta Automatic Synchronization pane is unchecked. For Example: If you hold the CTRL key while double-clicking the Runtime field of a song, GSelector will jump to the Runtime field for that song in the Song Window with the cursor in the Runtime field ready for editing.

Customizing a Browse format

You can design one or more custom browse formats to use in this pane, by working in the Browse Formats Design window. Once you have designed one or more new formats, you can assign a default format to use in the Browse Display pane in the Browse Formats Assignment window. You can also assign an existing format to the Results pane using the toolbar Format button. This lets you use any field in the Song window or Additional Information window in the format.

TIP: See also the Working with Browses topic for more ways to manage and sort information

Modifying a Filter or Song list

GSelector has a feature to remind you when you are working with a changed Filter or Saved List. This gives you the option to use the changed Filter or List temporarily in this editing session, or to save it permanently (see the notes here). With any previously saved Filter or List, changing the Filter request in any way - re-filtering the List or deleting items in the List - changes the Filter or List name, appending an asterisk to the end of the Filter or List name. In this illustration, the A1 Category Filter name, having been modified by additionally selecting B1 Secondary, is now renamed to  A1 Category*. Changed Filter or Lists are available for the duration of the current session. To reset the Filter or List to its original value, click the Reset (see notes here) button, or exit the window, or GSelector completely without saving any changes.

Using the Filter pane in the Browse window

TIP: In the Browse window Artists, Title, Albums, Participants and Media filter pane tabs, you can also do wildcard searches. See the notes here.

To select and view Songs, you work in the Filter pane.

  1. Select the appropriate Filter tab to display Songs by Attribute, Artist, Participant, Album or Artist in the Filter selection pane.
  2. If you select the Attribute, Participant or Media tab, you will see a further display of all Attributes or Participants where at least one value has been assigned to at least one Song; in the Media tab, all values are permanently displayed.
  3. Scroll to the selected Attribute, Participant, Song, Title, Album or Media item.
  4. Click a selection.
  1. The Filter pane element now displays total songs for the attributes.

The unselected icon changes to a selected icon, and the associated Songs are displayed in the browse display pane.

Clicking the selected element a second time reverses the selection process, and displays every Song not associated with this Attribute/Participant/Artist/Title/Album. See notes on selecting.

  1. When you have displayed a list of Songs searching under one element, you can then repeat the process to drill down into your library to Filter the displayed list further.
  2. So you could display all Song in a given Category, by selecting that category, and then search for Songs with a specific sound code within that category.

Wildcard searches

In a keyword search, a symbol may sometimes be inserted in the middle of a search term to retrieve words containing any character in the designated position. The Artists, Title, Albums, Participants and Media filter pane tabs allow the use of Wildcards. In GSelector, the default setting in all these windows is a single asterisk. For example, typing wom*n will retrieve both "woman" and "women."  Typing A* will retrieve all Artists / Titles / Albums / Participants / Media entries beginning with A. Used on its own, this will find everything in the database. This illustration shows the results of a full wildcard search. In the Participants tab, the default value of all is entered in the search pane. Clicking the Find button will retrieve everything for this station, and select them all for display. Here, the search has returned 765 selected Composers, 643 selected Musicians, and 60 selected Vocalists.

Text Grid searching (Predictive text)

When searching through a long Song list in the Browse pane, select the Song Title, Artist, or Album field, and type in the first letter to jump to all Song titles starting with that letter. Type in a second letter to narrow down your search. This is a handy way to rapidly get to the Song, Artist or Album you want. See the Hot key search notes in the Working with Browses topic for further details.

Selecting Songs in the Browse list

When you apply any criterion in any of the Filter tabs, you are selecting  Songs. The number of Selected Songs is shown above the Browse List. The numbers in parenthesis show the selected / total filtered Songs. The default Library Browse Selection Mode is Standard Windows Selection. This allows the user to use the SHIFT and CTRL keys on the keyboard to make multiple selections.

If GSelector Legacy is selected as the Library Browse Selection Mode in the Setup | Station | Features | Miscellaneous tab then the numbers in parenthesis show the unselected / selected filtered Songs. All Songs that are not selected for display are unselected.

In GSelector Legacy mode, Songs can be unselected from display in the Browse Display pane by clicking on the song status field in the first column. If the Show unselected song checkbox is unchecked when the song status field is selected then the Songs are removed from display.

Check the Show Unselected box to display all Songs that are unselected in the Browse Display pane, and if necessary, to change their status again.

If Songs are unselected from the default main Library view, and you check the Show unselected box, these Songs can be displayed along with any Filtered view later on.

Selecting and unselecting Songs does not remove them from eligibility to be scheduled. For details on banning Songs from Scheduling by Daypart, see the Banning by Daypart notes in the Song window topic.

TIP: When saving a list, only selected Songs are saved, whether the unselected Songs are displayed or not.

Using Research in the Attributes pane

This section should be reviewed along with the companion Song window Research tabs topics, and the Setup section Attributes and Columns topics.

Research Attributes

Research Column

Research Score Date

Research Attributes

All Attributes that are currently assigned to Songs are displayed under this node. See Using Research scores as Scheduling Attributes for full details. Typically a user might search by Research Attributes with a specific Research Score Date.

Research Columns

You can select any defined Research Column and specify a score range within the range you have defined in the Research Column window. This would allow you to view Songs by score ranges,  allowing a wider range of scores that would be possible with a single Research Attribute.

  1. Click  the Research Column Node to view all Columns.
  2. Click an individual Research Column note or click the More details button to open a pane where you can specify the number range to use.
  3. Enter a range and click OK.
  4. Or click the clear button to close the pane.

Research Score Date

The date on which the Research Score was collected. This Attribute is displayed in the Song window Research pane. As well as the preset values, Custom dates can be entered in the Browse window. This works like the other Date Attributes.
