Analysis window

The Analysis window can be used to view play analysis for any element: Song, Artist, Album, Title, Attribute, Participant, as well as Category - for one or more Dayparts, for any date range. You can analyze the entire Song library, or apply a Filter to analyze selected songs. There are two displays: the default Spins, and History, both accessed by tab. In the Spins tab there are further separation options available.

The Results pane shows all Spins for the selected element, sorted in descending order. Spins for any or all Dayparts can be displayed, with total figures for each column displayed at the bottom of the pane. In the separation display format, just Spins are displayed, with Minimum Separation values and Closest Play information; in this view you can also call up Maximum and Average separation values.

The Spins view can be formatted and sorted - see the working in the Analysis window notes.

Date/Time Range pane

This pane displays the date and time range being analyzed. When the Analysis window is accessed, the date and time range pane sets up to the most recently scheduled seven days, from 12AM up to but not including 12AM on the eighth day, or for the 24 hours starting from the Broadcast Start Hour, if this has been set differently in the Daypart Assignment window. You can accept these default values, or select something different. To specify a different range, click any field, type Alt+D on your keyboard, or click the Enter Dates button, to open the Date and Time Range pane. Once the Date Range is selected click the Generate Analysis button if no other changes in the filtering is needed.

By default the time range begins at the start of the From hour and finishes at the end of the Thru hour. Optionally, the time granularity can be changed using the Time Granularity of Scheduling and Reports option, in the Miscellaneous tab of the Setup | Station | Features window, to select the time up to the Minute or Second.

Applying a Song Filter or Song List

The Song filters and Song Lists created and edited in the Browse window (see the Saved Filter and Song Lists notes for details), can be used in several areas in GSelector, including here in the Analysis window. A Filter will remove all Songs that do not meet the criteria from the display, letting you drill down into your library for more precise results. A Song List will show play just for the Songs in the selected list. Any filter or list can be applied to the Songs in the Analysis pane. Click the selection arrow to open a list of saved filters and lists, scroll to the filter to use and enter.

Selecting what to analyze: the Spins field

This field is at the top left of the Analysis window, immediately below the Navigation buttons and the Song filter selection field. In the Spins field select one element (Song Attributes or Participants, Category or Category Group, etc) from this list. All Songs with the selected element are displayed, initially in Spins order view. When you select an attribute with multiple options - any of the Song attributes, or Sound Code, Tempo, and the like, the attribute will be displayed in the browse display. You can then view the individual elements in the display by clicking the tree control plus Song in the display.

Flatten (Not Coded)

The Flatten (Not Coded) option will flatten the results that are not coded, in the results pane, for the selected spins attribute. This option is disabled for Song, Artist, Title and Category as these fields are mandatory for all Songs and will never have a (Not Coded) record. When Flatten is not selected the results for the selected attribute will show listing each attribute in the default contracted form. The Songs that are not coded with the selected attribute will be shown under one heading of (Not Coded).

When the Flatten (Not Coded) option is selected the results are flattened showing each entry separately.

Show Category when Scheduled

When the 'Show Category When Scheduled' option is checked the results window will show the Categories of the song at the time of scheduling. Use the expander to the left of the song title to view the different categories for the song. This setting only works with the Spins setting of Song.

Wrap, Block or Hour Grid selection

After the start and end dates and hours to analyze are entered in the Date/Time Range Pane, the user can define further what they want analyzed.  When selecting the Wrap feature the analyzed range will include all hours and days specified in the range. So if the Range selected were From: Sat 12/25/2010 at 8 AM Thru: Fri 12/31/2010 at 2PM the hours analyzed would be from 8AM on the 25th of December thru 2PM the 31st of December, but if the user were to select Block for the same range the hours analyzed would be only 8AM thru 2PM on the selected days the rest of the hours on the selected days would not be analyzed. When using an Hour Grid the user will select an existing Hour Grid from a drop-down list or use the import button to Import an Hour Grid from another station within the database. When the Grid Inclusion option is selected the hours that are selected in the Hour Grid will be the only hours included for the Date and Time range specified. If the Grid Exclusion is selected the hours in the Hour Grid will be excluded for the Date and Time Range selected.

Daypart Picker pane

All dayparts are shown in this pane. Select one or more Dayparts, and check to include or uncheck to remove Spins in that Daypart from the Results pane.

To create and assign Dayparts, see the Daypart Assignment topic.

Generate Analysis

After the Date, Filter, Spins and Dayparts are selected, click the Generate Analysis button to generate the results in the Spins and History tabs.

Spins view tab

The Spins view tabs shows the results of the generated analysis as shown above. Use the Separation view options to change the view of the results. The results can be Saved to a Browse List.

Settings

The Settings button have a drop-down menu to show the Regenerate Analysis when Options Changed and the Clear Results options.

The Regenerate Analysis when Options Changed is checked by default. When this option is checked, the results of the Analysis window will automatically refresh when Min Separation, Max Separation, Avg Separation, and Avg Turnover are checked or unchecked to show the implementation of those values on the results. When the Regenerate Analysis when Options Changed, is not checked the user will need to click the Generate Analysis button with each change. The Clear Results option, in the Setting menu, can be used to clear the results pane.

Save to Browse List

The Save to Browse List button opens the Save Analysis Result to Browse List window. The Save to Browse List button is only available when Song is selected from the Spins drop-down option.

The Save Analysis Result to Browse List window can be used to save a specified Number (n) of Songs based on the Type (Top, Rank or Spins) selected to a browse list. Top will save the first n number of records. Rank will save the songs, including rank ties, based on the number specified. Spins will save the songs that have greater than or equal to the number of spins for the number specified. Use the Browse List Name field to give the browse list a name that can be recognized elsewhere in the system.

Minimum Spins field

By default, GSelector enters a value of 1 in this field, which will suppress items in the Analysis browses with no spins. Enter a value of 0 to view these items, or enter a larger number to only view items with larger numbers of spins.  See also the notes above. This option can be useful to trace 'problem' items: for example, you can view songs with zero spins, and then jump to the Song window from Analysis, and click the Adjustments tab to troubleshoot.

Maximum Rank field

Use this field in the Analysis spins view to limit your search size and speed up your search results. If you just want to see the top 50 spins for any selected item in a large search, enter this value. The value you enter changes according to your search.

Separation view options

Minimum Separation option and Minimum Separation duration field

Maximum Separation option

Average Separation option

Checking any Separation box replaces the Dayparts count columns with Separation value columns. All other selected fields are displayed. With any of the three separation boxes checked, the Results pane shows selected elements sorted in Spin order. With Minimum Separation, a further field shows the two closest Plays in the specified Date and Time range. The values displayed are for Dayparts checked in the Dayparts pane for the period set in the Date and time range pane. The display can be sorted by any header. All three separation values can be displayed at once if required.

Minimum Separation option and Minimum Separation duration field

Select the Min Separation option to display Minimum separation time values in the Results pane. In the duration field, set the minimum time value above which Minimum Separation times are displayed; this is used to filter the display. The duration field is only accessible when the Minimum Separation option is selected. The Closest Plays column is also visible when Min Separation is selected to show the Dates, Station and Time of the closest plays. Double-clicking on a Closest Play Min Sep value in the results pane will take the user to the second Closest Play entry in the Editor. Using the ALT or CTRL key while double-clicking the Min Sep value will take the user to the first Closet Play entry in the Editor.

Analysis Browse Display

The browse in the Analysis window works like most other browses in GSelector. Browse displays can be sorted by clicking on field headers, and fields sized to suit your requirements. For more details, see the Working with GSelector Browses notes. However, some fields in the display are fixed and cannot be moved.

Format selection button: Selecting other fields to display

/The Browse Formats button can be used to save the default format as a new format, save changes to an existing format, save an existing format to a new browse format, set a selected format as the assigned format for the window or temporarily assigned just for the session. Formats can also be permanently assigned to the Browse window in the Browse Formats Assignment window. Browse Formats can also be designed in the Browse Formats Design window. If the system has more than 20 browse formats available then a "More" option appears after the 20th format. Click the "More" option to open a secondary window with an additional list. Simply start typing in the list to quickly search to the name of the desired browse format.

  1. Click the arrow to the right of the button.
  2. Select a format and double-click or press enter.
  3. The new format is temporarily assigned to the browse window.
  4. Optionally, click the arrow to the right of the button again and select Set Selected Format as Assigned.
  5. Optionally, right-click a column header to Modify or Remove columns.
  6. Click the arrow to the right of the button again.
  7. Click Save or Save As if desired.

For more information on custom designing formats, see the Browse Formats Design and Browse Formats Assignment topics.

Results pane

The results pane displays what you have chosen to analyze. For example, if you have chosen to analyze Spins per Artist, the results pane will display Artists in order. When viewing anything other than Song spins, information is sorted in the same way, but you can open the heading (Artist, Album Attribute, and so on) under which the Spins are grouped to see the Songs for that heading, also sorted in Spin Order.

If Era is selected in the Spins drop-down the Spins column will show the spin count with the number of titles in parenthesis 11(7). In the following example the Era 1984-1985 shows 24 spins by 17 different titles. Click the plus to expand to see the titles in the Era.

All selected Dayparts are also displayed in the browse, showing the Spins for the selected Daypart for the selected period, in the format you have specified. See the Daypart picker pane notes in this topic for more information. The main fields in this pane cannot be removed, but you can add further fields by designing a browse format and specifying this format using the browse format button, and you can size these fields.

Results are displayed in a browse, which, like all GSelector Browses, can be sorted. See the notes on Working with Browses for details.

Keyboard Shortcuts can also be used to initiate the play of a single audio event or a list of audio events. Ctrl+F11 will play a single element. In a list, it will play the element having focus. Alt+F11 will play elements in a list consecutively. In a list, Alt+F11 will play the element having focus. When that element finishes playing, the next element lower in the list will play. This process will continue until the bottom of the list is reached. In a non-list context, such as in the song editing window, Ctrl+F11 and Alt+F11 will play only the current element. See the Using Audio in GSelector topic for more information on playing audio.

The results pane allows the user to select multiple rows using Shift or CTRL. The user can then copy (CTRL+C) and paste this selected data into an external program such as Notepad or Excel.

Selected Search Heading

Ranking, Number of Spins, and Percentage of play

Spins per daypart

Closest Plays

Category, Packet, Title and Album

Search Heading

The first column in the browse displays information for the field selected in the spins selection field. When displaying anything apart from a Song as shown here, the search heading can be expanded to show all songs for that search heading.

Rank, Number of Spins, and Percentage of Play

The Rank, Number of Spins, and Percentage of Play values are is displayed, broken down by song when the Search heading field is expanded. The Spins column will show the spin count with the number of titles in parenthesis 11(7) when Era is selected for the Analysis in the Spins drop-down.

Spins per Daypart

The total Spins figure is then broken down to show Spins per selected daypart, and further broken down to display Spins per Daypart for any song displayed.

Closest Plays

The Closest Plays column is visible when Min Separation option is selected to show the Date and Time of the two closest plays. A single play date and time will be shown when there is only one spin. Double-clicking on a Closest Play Min Sep value in the results pane will take the user to the second Closest Play entry in the Editor. Using the ALT or CTRL key while double-clicking the Min Sep value will take the user to the first Closet Play entry in the Editor. Clicking the ellipse button in the Closest Plays column will show a list of all the plays in the analyzed range.

Category, Packet, Title and Album

Unless any of these fields are being used in a search and selected in the Spins drop-down field , these fields are displayed at the right of the browse. When searching by any of these fields, the field is displayed at the left of the browse.

If a song is banned for a Daypart, the entry for that song and Daypart is a dash:  -  to indicate no Spins. Equally if there is no demand for that category in that daypart, the song will also display the no plays dash.

TIP: As with most GSelector browses, you can click any header to sort the browse by the contents of that column. This can make locating, say, a series of Songs by title or artist, much easier. All Sorts are displayed by the selected Header and order, with in this window, a secondary sort by Spins. So if you sort by Artist, the results will be displayed in Artist order, with all songs for each artist ranked in ascending or descending Spin order.

History tab

The History Tab in the Current Station Tab works similar to the History Map in the Song Window.

From the Spins view for a selected item, click the History tab. The History tab updates to show the selected item using a 1/4 hr plot, as in this detail. Individual Spins are shown with a colored bar, as shown here. Each bar is color coded to indicate the section of  the hour. Each hour in the grid can be double-clicked to view the selected hour in the Editor.
Red indicates a single spin in the first quarter hour;
Blue indicates a single spin in the second quarter hour;
Green indicates a single spin in the third quarter hour;
Yellow indicates a single spin in the last quarter hour;

The light blue is the default color showing the location of the Min Sep entries in the History Map. This color can be changed in the Tools | Global Settings | Appearances | Definition tab.

By enabling the Advanced History Map Options in the Setup | Station | Features | History tab, the user has the option to use the History Map Plot check boxes displayed below the Song History tab. Use the right scroll bar to view the entire active date range. Where an Hour Grid has been applied, the restricted hours are marked on the History Map in gray.

History Map Plots

By enabling the Advanced History Map Options in the Setup | Station | Features | History tab, the user has the option to use these History Map Plot check boxes.  Each cell in the History Map is divided into four invisible, vertical quadrants.  These represent, from left to right, the first, second, third and fourth quarter hour of the hour.  Using the 1/4 hr plot option will replace the X with the vertical plot line positioned in the appropriate cell quadrant to denote the songs scheduled position within the hour.  There are additional options for artist, vocalist and artist group when Song is selected as the Spins option.  Enabling any of these options will plot other songs by the artist(s), vocalist(s) and/or artist group(s) of the current song.  In these modes, each cell in the History Map is divided into four invisible, horizontal quadrants within each vertical quadrant.  These represent, from top to bottom, the song, the artist, the vocalist and the artist group.  Color coding further helps to distinguish these plots.  Any combination of these new options can be used, while clearing all of them returns the History Map to its default behavior.  The colors used for these options can be changed by working in the new History Plot section of the Tools | Global Settings | Appearances | Global Assignments dialog box.  The slider bar to the right of the check boxes allows the user to zoom in on the History Map. The On-Air button to the right of the 1/4 hr Plot can be used to show the current day and play position of the log in the History map.

Flyover Tooltip

Using the mouse to hover over any of the plots in the History Pane, in either the Standard or Advanced mode, will display details about the song scheduled.

Hide History Dates/Days

Dates or Days of the Week can be hidden from the History Map. This is useful for hiding Weekends or twofer Tuesdays.

Simply right-click on the Date or Day of the Week to hide and select one of the following options:

Hide Date - The Hide Date option will hide the selected date from the History Map.

Hide Day of Week - The Hide Day of Week option will show a menu with the days of the week listed. Select a day of the week to hide. All the days for the selected day will be hidden.

For Example: If Mondays is selected in the Hide Day of Week menu, then every Monday in the history will be hidden.

Reset - The Reset option will reset the history map so all history is showing for the selected asset.

Jumping to the Editor from the History map

You can jump directly to the Editor window for any Day and Hour in the History Map by selecting the Hour and double-clicking. If you select an Hour with plays recorded in the History Map, the Editor will open showing the Song with a highlight. If the Hour shows plays for more than one item - for example , where there are two instances of the same Artist in the same hour - GSelector will open the Editor highlighting the first of the multiple items. The default appearance of this highlight is the Focused Row Editor appearance. It can be modified in the Appearances Definition window.

TIP: Click the Back Navigation button to return to the Analysis window from the Song window or the Editor.

Broadcast Start Hour and the History Map display

The History Map starts from the time specified in the Broadcast Start Hour , defined in the Daypart Assignment window . The default value is 12a, but can be set to any hour from 12a to 11p.
