Database Management DBMS

RCS Database Management Service (DBMS) is a windows service that works with Zetta® to provide an easier mechanism to switch between SQL database servers. The primary use case is to setup a Local database on each of the sequencer and/or Hot Spare sequencer computers to use the Emergency On-Air Backup for each station. When the Emergency On-Air Backup is configured Zetta will make a copy of the main database on the local computers then restore the database on the local computer for use.

The secondary use is to configure setup two DBMS servers, using the Database Configuration window, so that when the SQL Server computer or SQL Server itself is down, Zetta can be switched to another server with a backup instance of SQL Server. Please consult RCS Support before making changes to the Database Configuration.

When the Make Primary button is clicked the user will receive a warning allowing them to confirm their selection.

Use the Refresh button to refresh the Database Management window.

DBMS Operation

In a typical setup all Zetta clients are setup with a single database which exists on the SQL Server. Zetta, Startup Manager and all Zetta processes communicate directly to the database. When SQL Server goes down, so does most of Zetta.

Go Local

The (localdb) is visible when configured and active for the local computer. Once the Emergency On-Air Backup is configured and a backup and restore of the database is complete, clicking the Go Local button will switch the configured computer over to the Local database.  Any changes made in this database will not be populated to the main database.

Make Primary

DBMS servers provide a mechanism to remove this single point of failure. When two SQL Servers are present, the Zetta clients need to be routed so all Zetta clients communicate with the current SQL Server. The DBMS servers perform this job. The two DBMS servers are setup to communicate with their respective SQL Server. The DBMS services will communicate to make sure that there is a single primary DBMS. Zetta clients communicate with DBMS and learn the location of the primary DBMS and the appropriate database.

When the DBMS is switched to a different SQL Server from within Zetta, all the Zetta clients will be re-routed to the new DBMS and communicate with the new SQL Server database.
